That Drip Is Costing You More Than You Think

A dripping faucet is easy to tune out. It is not an emergency. It is not flooding anything. But a slow drip — just one drop per second — wastes over 3,000 gallons of water per year. A faster drip can waste 10 times that. Over a year, that is a meaningful addition to your water bill from a repair that takes under an hour.

Beyond the water waste, a dripping faucet is usually a sign that the internal valve components are wearing out. Left alone, a worn washer or cartridge can eventually cause the valve to fail completely — turning a $150 repair into a $400 replacement. We fix it right the first time, with parts on the truck.

We handle everything from a simple washer replacement to a full bathroom fixture upgrade. Kitchen faucets, bathroom sinks, shower valves, tub fillers, outdoor hose bibs, and utility sinks — all of it. Same-day service for repairs, and we work with every major brand.

What Is Actually Happening Inside a Dripping Faucet

A dripping faucet is not just water escaping — it is a mechanical failure inside the valve. Understanding what is failing helps you decide whether a quick repair will solve it, or if the fixture is approaching the end of its useful life.

Here are the four most common internal failures, what causes them, and how we fix each one:

Worn Rubber Washer or O-Ring

The rubber seal that closes off water flow when the handle is turned off. Over time, rubber hardens, cracks, or develops mineral deposits that prevent a tight seal. This is the most common cause of a slow drip.

Replace washer or O-ring — $5–$15 part, 20–30 minute repair

Failed Cartridge

Modern single-handle and many dual-handle faucets use a cartridge that controls both water flow and temperature mixing. The ceramic discs or rubber seals inside the cartridge wear out, causing leaks, temperature inconsistency, or a handle that is hard to turn.

Replace cartridge — $25–$75 part, 30–45 minute repair

Corroded Valve Seat

The metal surface the washer presses against. In areas with hard water — like here — mineral deposits and corrosion pit the valve seat, creating gaps where water leaks through even with a new washer.

Resurface or replace valve seat — $50–$100, 45–60 minute repair

Loose or Damaged Packing Nut

The packing nut around the valve stem compresses a seal that prevents water from leaking up through the handle. If it loosens over time, water seeps out around the handle base.

Tighten or replace packing — $10–$20, 15-minute repair

The Math on a Dripping Faucet

A slow drip (1 drop/second) wastes 3,000+ gallons per year — about $60–$100 added to your annual water bill. A faster drip wastes 10x that. The repair costs $100–$200. Ignoring it for a year costs more than fixing it five times over.

If you are handy, replacing a washer or cartridge is a reasonable DIY project for many faucets. But if the drip persists after replacing the obvious part, the issue is likely a corroded valve seat or an internal crack — problems that require specialized tools and experience to diagnose. That is when calling a plumber saves you from buying parts you do not need.

Shower Valves — The One Fixture Worth Upgrading Before It Fails

If your shower suddenly goes scalding hot when someone flushes a toilet, you have an older mixing valve without pressure-balancing protection. It is not just annoying — it is a genuine safety hazard, especially for young children and elderly family members. A sudden temperature spike can cause serious burns in seconds.

Modern pressure-balancing valves automatically compensate for pressure changes elsewhere in the system, keeping your shower temperature within 3 degrees Fahrenheit even when a toilet flushes or a dishwasher cycles. BC building code has required them in new construction since the mid-1990s. If your home was built before then, there is a good chance yours does not have one.

Thermostatic valves go a step further — they maintain both pressure and temperature independently, so you can set your exact preferred temperature and it stays there regardless of what happens elsewhere in the house. They cost more upfront but are the gold standard for comfort and safety.

Signs Your Shower Valve Needs Attention

Temperature spikes when other fixtures are used
Handle is hard to turn or feels loose or gritty
Water drips from showerhead when the shower is off
Cannot get the temperature right regardless of handle position
Visible corrosion or mineral buildup around the valve escutcheon
Shower has been running the same valve for 15+ years
Inconsistent water pressure during your shower
Grinding or squeaking sound when adjusting the handle

Shower valve replacement is more involved than a faucet repair — it usually requires cutting an access panel in the wall behind the shower, removing the old valve body, and installing a new one with proper soldering or PEX connections. The wall repair adds to the cost, which is why we always assess whether a cartridge replacement (a much simpler repair) will solve the problem first.

For homes with children, elderly residents, or anyone with temperature sensitivity, upgrading to a pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve is one of the best safety investments you can make in your bathroom. We handle the full installation, including wall repair, and we work with all major valve brands.

Fixture Types — What Makes Sense for Your Home

Whether you are replacing a worn-out faucet or upgrading as part of a renovation, the options can be overwhelming. Here is a straightforward breakdown of the most common fixture types, what they cost, and when each makes sense.

We install all of these and will recommend based on your usage, bathroom layout, and budget — not what is most profitable for us.

Fixture TypeBest ForPrice RangeNotes
Standard Kitchen FaucetMost kitchens$150–$400Single or dual handle, pull-down or fixed spout
Commercial-Style FaucetHeavy cooking$300–$700High-arc, spring neck, powerful spray — popular in modern kitchens
Touchless FaucetHygiene, convenience$250–$600Motion-activated — great for busy kitchens and households with kids
Bathroom Vessel FaucetVessel sinks$150–$400Taller spout to clear vessel rim — requires specific sink pairing
Wall-Mount FaucetModern bathrooms$200–$500Clean countertop look — requires in-wall rough-in plumbing
Pressure-Balance ValveSafety, code compliance$100–$300Prevents temperature spikes — required in new construction
Thermostatic ValveLuxury, precision$300–$800Set exact temperature — independent of pressure changes
Frost-Free Hose BibAll outdoor faucets$80–$200Drains automatically — prevents freeze damage in winter

For most kitchen replacements, a Moen Arbor or Delta Leland in a pull-down configuration hits the sweet spot — reliable, good-looking, widely available parts, and priced in the $250–$400 range. For bathroom upgrades, Kohler Devonshire or Delta Cassidy offer classic styling with modern cartridge technology. For shower safety upgrades, we recommend Moen Posi-Temp or Delta Monitor pressure-balancing valves. If you need help selecting and installing the right fixtures, a professional Plumbers Kamloops team can guide you through the options and handle the installation from start to finish.

Outdoor Hose Bibs — The Small Upgrade That Prevents a Big Problem

Standard outdoor faucets are one of the leading causes of burst pipes in winter. When you turn off a regular hose bib, water remains in the pipe between the valve and the outlet. In a cold snap — common here from November through March — that water freezes, expands, and cracks the pipe inside your wall. You do not notice the damage until spring, when you turn on the faucet and water starts pouring into your basement or crawl space.

A frost-free hose bib solves this by design. The valve seat is located inside the wall, 8–12 inches from the exterior outlet. When you turn off the water, the remaining water in the pipe drains out automatically through the outlet — there is no water left in the pipe to freeze. It is a simple mechanical solution that eliminates the risk entirely.

If your home still has standard outdoor faucets and they are more than 10 years old, upgrading to frost-free bibs is one of the most cost-effective preventative measures you can take. Installation typically runs $150–$300 per bib, and it is a permanent fix.

Signs Your Hose Bib Needs Replacement

Visible corrosion or rust around the faucet body
Water drips from the spout when the handle is off
Handle is hard to turn or feels loose
Previous winter freeze damage in the home
The bib is a standard (non-frost-free) type
The bib is more than 15 years old

Brands We Work With — and What We Recommend

We install and repair all major faucet and fixture brands. Here is what we see most often in local homes, and our honest take on each:

Parts availability matters — a beautiful European faucet is not worth much if you cannot get a replacement cartridge in BC without a 6-week special order. We factor that into every recommendation.

Moen

Best warranty in the industry (lifetime on most models). Cartridges are widely available and easy to replace. The Moen 1225 cartridge is the most common replacement part we carry. Posi-Temp shower valves are our go-to for safety upgrades.

Best for: Reliability and warranty support

Delta

Excellent value across all price points. Diamond Seal Technology cartridges last longer than standard rubber seals. The Leland and Cassidy lines are consistently popular for kitchen and bath. Monitor shower valves are solid pressure-balancing options.

Best for: Value and cartridge longevity

Kohler

Premium styling and build quality. Slightly higher parts cost, but the finish durability is excellent. Devonshire and Forte lines are popular for bathroom renovations. Kohler shower valves are well-engineered but require proprietary parts.

Best for: Premium finishes and design

American Standard

Strong flush performance in toilets and solid faucet construction. The Champion toilet line is our recommendation for homes with recurring clog issues. Faucets are straightforward to service with widely available parts.

Best for: Performance and straightforward service

Grohe

German engineering with excellent water flow technology. Higher price point but exceptional build quality. StarLight chrome finish is genuinely durable. Parts are available through specialty distributors in Vancouver.

Best for: Premium European quality

Hansgrohe

Sister company to Grohe with a focus on shower technology. Raindance showerheads and Croma hand showers are industry-leading for water experience. EcoSmart models reduce water use without sacrificing feel.

Best for: Shower technology and water efficiency

We also service Pfister, Brizo, Symmons, Price Pfister, and many boutique brands. If you have a fixture and are not sure whether it is worth repairing, send us a photo — we can usually identify the brand and model from the design and tell you whether parts are available.

Repair or Replace? Here Is How to Think About It

This is the question we get most often, and the answer depends on the fixture's age, brand, condition, and the nature of the problem. Here is our honest framework:

Repair Makes Sense When...

The fixture is under 10 years old
The issue is a worn washer, cartridge, or O-ring
The finish is still in good condition
The brand has readily available replacement parts
You have not had multiple repairs on the same fixture
The fixture matches the bathroom or kitchen style

Replacement Makes Sense When...

The fixture is over 15 years old with frequent issues
The finish is corroded, pitted, or peeling
Replacement parts are discontinued or hard to find
You are renovating the room anyway
You want water efficiency — modern fixtures use 30% less
The valve body is cracked or internally damaged

We will give you an honest assessment — we will not push a replacement if a repair will genuinely solve the problem. And if replacement is the right call, we will help you choose a fixture that fits your style, your usage, and your budget.
